Objective: The objective of this sermon on divine direction is to show the believer what Divine direction was about. We are going to talk about how to be led by God and the hindrances that may cause you to not be led by God.
Main Text: “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it…” – Isaiah 30:21 (KJV).
My dear brothers and sisters, life is a journey. Every day, we are walking. We’re making decisions—some small, some big. And every step we take leads us somewhere. But the question is, who is guiding those steps?
There’s something that worries me. Too many people are walking through life with no clear direction. They are guessing. They are hoping things just “work out.” But we were not created to live like that. We were not saved to wander aimlessly. As children of God, we are meant to be led—not by our emotions, not by pressure, not by what others are doing—but by God Himself.
That’s what we call divine direction. It means God is the one showing you the way. He is not leaving you to figure things out on your own. He wants to speak to you. He wants to guide you. And I want us to learn how to hear Him.
What Is Divine Direction?
Divine direction is God telling you, “This is the way. Walk in it.” It’s when the Lord becomes your personal GPS, your Shepherd, your compass. It’s not something loud or dramatic all the time—it can be gentle, quiet, but very clear. It means you don’t just move because an opportunity looks good. You move because God has said so.
Let me say this clearly: Divine direction is not just for pastors or prophets. It is for every child of God. If you belong to Him, He wants to guide you.
The Bible says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” – Psalm 37:23
God takes pleasure in guiding His children. You are not a burden to Him. You don’t have to beg Him to speak. He wants to lead you.
And He does it in many ways—through His Word, by His Spirit, through peace or restlessness in your heart, through wise counsel, and sometimes even through dreams or visions. The key is to be sensitive and willing to obey.
Why You Need Divine Direction
Let’s talk honestly. Why do we need divine direction so badly?
1. To Avoid Wasted Years
Many people are sincere, but they are sincerely wrong. They are working hard, trying their best, but they are moving in the wrong direction. You can be very busy, and still be heading nowhere. Without divine direction, you can spend years building something God never asked you to build.
“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” – Proverbs 14:12
Just because something looks right doesn’t mean it is right. That’s why we must be led.
2. To Fulfill Your Destiny
You were not born by accident. You carry purpose. But that purpose cannot be fulfilled by chance. You must follow the one who made you.
“O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.” – Jeremiah 10:23
We are not wise enough to lead ourselves. Only God knows where He’s taking us. He sees the end from the beginning.
3. To Walk in Peace and Safety
There is peace in knowing God is with you in your decisions. Even when things are hard, you’ll have confidence because you know you didn’t go on your own.
“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.” – Psalm 23:2
When God leads, He provides peace, clarity, and protection. But when we lead ourselves, we often walk into stress, confusion, and regrets.
4. To Please God
You can be successful in the eyes of people and still be out of order in the eyes of God. Divine direction helps us live in obedience.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6
He wants us to trust Him fully. Not half-heartedly. Not after we’ve made our plans. But from the beginning.
How to Access the Voice of God for Direction
So how do we hear from God? How does He lead us?
1. Through His Word
God’s Word is alive. It is not just history—it is His voice written down. When you study it with a sincere heart, you’ll find light.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” – Psalm 119:105
Sometimes, a verse will jump out at you. Sometimes, you’ll read something that answers exactly what you were praying about. That’s God.
2. Through the Holy Spirit
If you are born again, the Spirit of God lives inside you. He doesn’t only convict you of sin—He also leads you in truth.
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…” – John 16:13
Sometimes He gives peace. Other times, He makes you restless. Pay attention. He’s speaking.
3. Through Godly Counsel
We are not meant to do life alone. God often speaks through people He has placed around us—pastors, mentors, godly friends.
“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” – Proverbs 11:14
But be careful. Not every advice is godly. We must test everything by the Word and Spirit of God.
4. Through Prayer and Fasting
There are some answers that will not come until we separate ourselves and seek God deeply. Fasting tunes your spirit to hear clearly.
“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said…” – Acts 13:2
Make room for stillness. Silence the noise. Let God speak.
Hindrances to Hearing the Voice of God
We must also understand what blocks us from hearing Him clearly.
1. Sin and Disobedience
Sin dulls your hearing. It clouds your heart and shuts your spiritual ears.
“But your iniquities have separated between you and your God…” – Isaiah 59:2
If you want to hear God, you must walk in repentance and purity.
2. Pride and Self-Will
When your mind is already made up, you may not hear what God is saying.
“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” – James 4:6
We must come to God empty—ready to say, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
3. Distraction and Noise
The world is loud. Social media, opinions, news—it can drown out the still, small voice of God.
“Be still, and know that I am God…” – Psalm 46:10
Sometimes, all you need is silence. Turn everything off. Just listen.
4. Impatience
God doesn’t always speak on our timeline. Many people move ahead because they’re tired of waiting. That’s dangerous.
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him…” – Psalm 37:7
If He hasn’t spoken, don’t move. Stay where you are. His timing is perfect.
Final Words
Beloved, divine direction is not a luxury—it is a necessity. You can’t afford to walk blindly anymore. Don’t guess. Don’t assume. Ask God.
Ask like David: “Shall I go up?” And wait till He says, “Go.”
Your life is too precious to waste. Let God guide you.
“Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.” – 1 Samuel 3:10
May your ears be opened. May your heart be willing. And may your steps be ordered by the Lord.
