Intercessory prayers refer to prayers where we pray on behalf of others. We also understand that when we pray prayers backed by the scriptures, they are even more powerful and effective. So, in this article, I am going to show you 10 intercessory prayer points with scriptures that you can use to pray.

The following are areas of intercessory prayers with scriptures to back your prayers or the need to pray:

Prayers for Pastors and Ministers 

We need to pray for pastors and those in ministry. These guys need our prayers and as Apostle Paul admonishes us in Colossians 4:3;

And in 1 Thessalonians 5:25 also:

On this note, here are some intercessory prayers for pastors and ministers according to the scriptures we have just seen. 

1. Father, I pray for my Pastor that you release to him the door of utterance to communicate your word to the people with power and wisdom
2. Lord, I ask that everything that concerns him and his family will be settled so that he can focus on you and the teaching and preaching of your word
3. Father, give my pastor the inspiration from your word. Open his eyes to see deep secrets in your word and grant him the grace to teach them like you would want. 
4. Lord, I pray for my pastor that you give him the grace to stand and not be a castaway after he has preached the gospel (1 Cor 9:27)

Prayers for Church Members and Followers 

Numbers 21:7; Deuteronomy 9:26; 2 Chronicles 30:18; Luke 22:32; 1 Samuel 7:5: 1 Samuel 12:23

Another aspect where we can make intercessory prayers is for church members and followers. As a leader in church, the pastor of a congregation, or head of department, we are enjoined to pray for those who are following us. 

It is an honor to be a leader and there are responsibilities attached. One of such is praying for the people we are leading. 

The following scriptures show why it is important for leaders, pastors, and HODs to pray for their members:

Having read through the scriptures, here are prayers to pray for them:

1. Father, I bring before you the members of the church/unit and I ask that you continue to make them grow in love and in the knowledge of your Son. 
2. Father, bring to pass every promise you have made to them through your word spoken by my mouth and in your Word that they might be hopeful in you and trust you even more.
3. Lord, settle the things that concern them so that they can serve you and worship you in all sincerity and truth. 
4. Lord, heal the sick among them. I commit them into your hands that you bring healing to their bodies, soul, and spirit, in the name of Jesus. 
5. Father, cause the zeal that consumed Jesus to be in them. Let them become desirous of you and your will for their lives. May they become useful and yielded to your service, in the name of Jesus

Intercessory Prayer Points for Friends 

You should also pray for your friends. The Bible says that;

Praying for his friends also ensured that Job got the blessing from God. You ought to pray for your friends and you can say the following prayers for them:

1. Father, I pray for my friends (mention their names) that you bring them to the knowledge of your son Jesus. I ask that they will see the light of your glorious gospel and submit themselves to you 
2. Lord, I ask that you give my friends the desires of their hearts and cause them to live happily and rejoice in you
3. Father, the struggle that they are going through I ask that you bring them out of it unhurt and unscathed. Show them that you are a present help in time of need
4. Lord God, for any of my friends going through a challenge who is unable to share it, I ask that you hear their secret cries and send them help, in the name of Jesus
5. Father, if there is any friend in my life that you are not comfortable with, Lord, I pray that you separate me from them, in the name of Jesus. 

Prayers for Children and Loved Ones 

As a parent, you should offer intercessory prayers for your children. Your loved ones are also not exempted. They need to be prayed for too. This was the practice of Job in Job 1:5;

The following are intercessory prayer points for children, loved ones, and anyone who’s related and associated with us:

1. Father, in any way, my kids have sinned against you, I ask that you show them mercy and forgive them.
2. Lord, I ask that you bring my children to come to the knowledge of your son. Encounter them like you encountered Saul on the way to Damascus 
3. Father, I pray for my siblings and relatives who are yet to turn to you (mention their names), I ask that you force a change in their lives. Do something to them that will make them see the need to turn to you. 
4. Lord, I pray for my kids’ academics. They will prove to be burning and shining lights. May their academic performance bring glory to your name, in the name of Jesus 
5. Father, I commit my family members into your hands that you continue to keep them in good health. No agenda of darkness will prevail over my family members in the name of Jesus 

Prayers for the Government and People in Leadership 

We are expected to pray for people who are in authority. See the scriptures below:

These are prayers you should pray for the government and people in leadership positions:

1. Father, I ask that you make our leaders your tools in enacting policies that will make our lives comfortable so that we can serve you in sincerity and truth
2. Lord, I pray that You inspire our leaders by Your spirit so that they may become vessels to propagate Your word
3. Lord, we need leaders after your heart and not those will use leadership positions to exploit the people or for their personal gains.
4. Father, I ask that any policy or move by our leaders that is not to Your glory be crushed by Your power in the name of Jesus 
5. Father, may our leaders not be agents and tools in the hands of the devil. This nation is yours and so are the inhabitants. 

Prayers for Colleagues and Associates 

You should also pray for your colleagues and associates at work. If you are into ministry, you can also pray for other people doing ministry. This was what Moses did for Aaron as revealed in the scripture below:

Here are prayers to say for colleagues:

1. Father, I pray for (mention the name of your colleague) that you will continue to give them strength to carry on their work in the name of Jesus 
2. Lord, I ask that their secret battles and the things that keep them up at night will be heard favorably in your courts. May they receive the answers to the things they’ve been trusting you for in the name of Jesus
3. Father, give them the wisdom and understanding that is required to do their work and make them profitable to the glory and praise of your name. 

Intercession Prayer Points for the Church 

The Church and not just your local church needs prayers. These intercession prayer points for the church have a global emphasis, focusing on the church as an entity rather than a denomination or local assembly. 

In 1 Kings 8:30, we see an example of what it means to pray for the Church. 

Not just as a building alone, the church as an entity needs prayer. Here are some prayer points to say for the church:

1. Father, we ask that you make our the church worldwide to be beacons of hope in the world buffeted by many troubles. 
2. Father, I ask that you give us the power and grace to be change agents in our world.
3. Lord, make your church a home of solutions to the many problems that people are going through today 
4. Father, I ask that in the church, the world will find the answers they seek, in the name of Jesus. 
5. Father, may the church not be found wanting in developmental strides that affect the world. May we become instruments in your hands, bringing your dominion in the world today. 

Prayers for the Nation or City 

It is our duty as believers to pray for the nation or city where we live. In Psalm 122:6, the Bible says;

Your Jerusalem is where you live not necessarily the Israeli capital today. So, your Jerusalem could be San Diego or Abuja or Mexico City or Kinshasa or Johanessburg. Anywhere you live and call home is your Jerusalem.  

God further tips the scale in Jeremiah 29:7;

So, even if you were captured and taken to another city against your will, you should pray for the peace and prosperity of that city. 

1. Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank you for this city and country. Lord, I ask that your plans and purposes for this place will find expression and no weapon of darkness will hinder it.
2. Father, I ask that you keep this city in peace and bring the reign of terror to an end.
3. Lord, I pray that you cause this city’s economy to grow and blossom because it will give allowance for my growth and prosperity too. 
4. Father, I ask that you raise men in this city who will be after your heart to ensure that your purpose and counsel for this city come to fulfillment. 
5. Father, I pray that every plan of darkness to overrun this city, may they come to nothing. I decree that your kingdom reigns in this city and we are subject to your rule and dominion only 

Prayers for Members of the Body 

As believers, we ought to pray for each other. Apostle Paul spoke about Epaphras in Colossians 4:12 who was always praying for the believers in the church. 

When you read James 5:16, the Bible talks about praying for each other too;

You could pray these prayer points for members of the church:

1. Father, I pray for the members of the church that you continue to uphold and strengthen them by your might in the name of Jesus. 
2. Father, I ask that every one of your purposes for their life, everything that you have predestined for them will find expression in their lives without fail. 
3. Father, I ask that you make the believers grow in the knowledge of your will and serve you better in spirit and in truth 
4. Father, I ask that you make us grow in love for each other and help us to uphold the unity of the Spirit in one mind (Philippians 1:9; Ephesians 4:3)
5. Father, I ask that you give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation. That we may know you as you want us to, in the name of Jesus. (Ephesians 1:17)

Prayers for People Who Despise You 

This section of intercessory prayer points is one that most people wouldn’t want to see or hear. But it is a command from God for us to pray for our enemies and those who despise us. 

You should pray for them in this manner:

1. Lord, I refuse to be resentful towards this person (you should mention their name). I ask that you change my heart towards them.
2. Father, I pray that you touch their heart and make them realize where they are getting things wrong
3. Lord, I pray that you convict them about their character and actions and begin to rule over them
4. Father, I ask that you help me build a better relationship with them. Make them willing to foster a good relationship between us to the glory of your name. 
5. Father, if their past experiences or trauma is the reason for their attitude towards me, I ask that you help them heal in the name of Jesus 

Prayers for the Conversion of Lost Souls and the Growth of Evangelistic Ministries 

We are expected to pray for the lost souls and by extension the growth of missions or evangelism. This is what Jesus was saying when in Matthew 9:38;

These are some prayers for the lost:

1. Father, I ask that you increase the number of laborers in the fields to reach the lost even more
2. Lord, I ask that you strengthen those who are already in the mission fields around the world. Keep them in the fold, uphold them, and reward their labors, speedily, Lord, in the name of Jesus 
3. Father, I ask that you send reaper angels into harvest fields and turn men to yourself 
4. Lord, awaken the church to understand the need for evangelism so that we can join forces in achieving this mission globally. 
5. Father, I ask that all it takes to preach your word to the lost, may you grant to us. From willingness to yield, finance, direction, power, anointing, grace, and much more. 

Prayers for the Sick 

Last but not least, we should pray for the sick among us. The Bible says 

These are prayers to pray for the sick:

1. Father, I ask that you cause your healing to rest on (mention the name of the sick one) even right now, in the name of Jesus 
2. Lord, I pray that every yoke of recurring illness in the life of this person, let the contract be annulled and abolished 
3. Father, every plan of darkness to afflict my brother/sister be brought to nothing. Only your plan and purpose for their life will find expression in the name of Jesus 
4. Lord, this sickness is not unto death. I call forth life to fill the vessel of this person. By your stripes, we were healed and he/she is healed even this instant.
5. Father, may your healing power rest on every sick one in our midst in the name of Jesus.
