This is why James admonished us in James 1:22
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
As much as we learn, we must do. This teaching today is not to equip us with knowledge about prayer alone but encourage us to pray. We are going to see how prayer is the key and what doors they open.
By understanding the doors prayers open and how they have opened them from scriptures, we will be motivated to give ourselves to prayers as we trust God for the same results in our life.
Main Text:
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; — Ephesians 6:18 (KJV)
The main keyword from the text we just read is “praying always.” This is what is communicated also in 1 Thessalonians 5:17. The Bible admonishes us to pray always and there are two reasons why the believer must pray.
1. Prayer is one of the believer’s communication lines to God.
One of the most secured ways we can talk to God which is a daily necessity for our lives is by prayer. The most basic and accurate definitions of prayer is that it is man talking to and with God. So, prayer is important because it is our access to God.
2. God is unlimited and man is limited
And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.— Luke 18:27 (KJV)
Man is limited. There’s a limit to what we can do. But God’s power is unlimited. By our strength, we cannot amount to anything.
By our energy, we cannot amount to much. But God’s strength helps us become the best. The only way we can access this unlimited power of God for our lives is by prayer.

Prayer is the Key to Intimacy with God
Psalms 63
¹ (A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.) O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
² To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
³ Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
⁴ Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
⁵ My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
⁶ When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
⁸ My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
If there’s anyone who models intimacy with God it is David. Intimacy with God is very important because this is one of the reasons we are on the Earth.
God wants to have constant fellowship and communion with us. The kind of intimacy is the type that is expressed in Psalms 63.
When you read verse 3, David is saying the way I’ve experienced you in the sanctuary (the church), that’s how I want to experience you everyday of my life. This is a prayer. This is what our prayers should be about.
From each verse of the text above, we can point out important lessons to help us understand how prayer is key to intimacy.
We must seek God in prayer for intimacy much more than we seek physical comfort. David said “early will I seek thee,” it means this is the first thing we must be about – worshipping God, enjoying His lovely presence, and attempting to discover what is in the mind of God.
Our lives should be characterized with His power and glory. The same way we enjoy amazing fellowship in church and see His power evident to heal and deliver, that’s how we must crave to see His power and presence in our lives everyday.
In verse 8, the Bible says “my soul followeth hard after you.” This is not for something. Just an undying desire to know God, find God, do His will, and live in His presence.
Prayer is the Key to Power and the Anointing
In Luke 4:1, the Bible says,
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
In the wilderness, the Bible makes us understand that Jesus fasted and prayed. After the experience, verse 14 of Luke 4 says,
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
Jesus went from just being full of the Holy Ghost to returning in power. Power and anointing are the fruits of prayer. Through prayers, we access the power and anointing of the Spirit.
In Acts 2, we know the story of the outpouring of the Spirit. The outpouring of the Spirit as promised by Jesus in Acts 1:8 was going to fill the disciples with power. However, this is only possible if they tarried in Jerusalem. But what were they doing as they waited?
See Acts 1:14,
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
If they had not continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, they wouldn’t have gotten the promise and the power wouldn’t have been deposited.
By prayer, we access power as we fellowship with God’s Spirit.
Prayer is Key to Divine Direction
¹ Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
² As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. – Acts 13.
Prayer gives us access to the voice of God which provides direction. There is no way we can go through life and avoid mistakes without the voice of God. Jeremiah puts it perfectly when he said,
O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. – Jeremiah 10:23
God knows the beginning from the end. He was in the beginning and He is in the end (Revelation 22:13). This makes Him know all things. You can’t say what’s going to happen when you make a decision but God can.
This is why we must subscribe to His leading and direction and the only way we can access His voice in this regard is to give ourselves to prayer.
Prayer is the Key to Strength
Another door prayer opens is the door for the release of strength. The Bible says 1 Samuel 2:9,
He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
The physical energy of man or what the Bible sometimes refers to as the arm of flesh is not sufficient for the battles of life. It is even more important if you have to do something God has called you to do.
In the life of Jesus, we saw that He needed strength and we see how prayers provided Him with that strength.
³⁹ And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
⁴⁰ And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
⁴¹ And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
⁴² Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
⁴³ And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. – Luke 22
Jesus was failing under the crunch of the load of the cross. The burden of destiny was making Him faint at heart and as He prayed, an angel came to strengthen Him.
This is what happens to us when we pray. We are strengthened by God’s power. Many of us are weak at heart, incapable of doing the things God expects for us. This is why Paul admonishes,
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; — Ephesians 3:16.
Depending on the arm of flesh or your physical strength is tantamount to failure. See what Hezekiah said,
With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah. — 2 Chronicles 32:8.
Only with the strength of God can we go through this tumultuous world and we gain this divine strength through prayers.
Prayer is the Key to Overwhelming Supply
In Matthew 14:14-21, we see the story of Jesus and how He fed five thousand men excluding women and children with only five loaves of bread and two fishes. This is one of the miracles of Jesus that continues to rattle my mind.
What sort of multiplication happened that made that boy’s lunch to feed more than 10,000 people if we are factoring the women and children.
Nothing worsen my rattled mind like when the Bible records that there were 12 baskets of food remaining.
Now, when you look at this account, there’s something you might miss. The fact that Jesus looked to heaven and blessed the food. That is prayer. With that simple gesture of prayer, five loaves of bread and two fishes multiplied in overwhelming fashion.
When Apostle Paul prayed for the church in Philippi, he said,
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19
The riches in glory are not exhaustible that’s why it was easy for those fishes and bread to be multiplied. There’s no limit to God’s supply. No limit whatsoever. I like how Ephesians 3:20 puts it,
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Whether you are asking God in prayer or thinking about it, God is able to do even more. Because His riches aren’t exhaustible and by prayer we can open that door.
Counsel:
Determine to always pray regardless of how you feel, the situation of things, and whether there’s a delay. Praying is our life and it is our way to God and the mighty supplies at His right hand.
Prayers:
- Oh Lord, help me to trust in you and be unrelenting in prayers. I will never have a reason to not come to you in prayers, in the name of Jesus. (Romans 12:12)
- Father, deliver me from lukewarmness and help me to always pray. I desire intimacy and fellowship. Lord, in the name of Jesus. (1 Thess 5:17; Psalms 63:8)
